The first Baby Week was held in January 1923 for the whole of India, supported by the enthusiastic money raising activities of Lady Reading, the Viceroy wife. One out of three babies died at birth or shortly thereafter. As one of the high officials said to Lady Reading ‘It’s mercy so many of the poor little beggars die, there is no welcome for them especially if female, and there is not enough food to go round as it is’. Baby Weeks in January became an annual event, gaining momentum, support and funding each year.
