Legend in Urdu : ALL THREE OF THE AMBASSADORS INTRODUCED TO THE NATIONAL MINT OF FRENCH IN THE EIGHTH MONTH OF THE PILGRIMAGE 1202.
Probably struck at the Birmingham mint. Has the appearance of the coins struck by Boulton for Sumatra in 1786. A more modern rendition of Tippoo’s name is ‘Tipu’ while ‘Tippoo Sahib’ has been replaced by Tipu Sultan. Tipu himself liked to be called ‘Tipu Sultan Shah Bahadur’. Shah meaning ‘King’ or ‘Ruler’ and Bahaduring meaning ‘a great and distinguished personage’. Tipu’s ambassadorial group, bound for France, left India in July 1787 under the leadership of Osman Khan and arrived in Toulon on 9 June 1788. They met the King, toured the Mint and ‘the turbaned strangers from Mysore’ became the talk of Paris. They stayed until money ran out and had to raise a loan to finance their trip home. From Louis XVI, they extracted nothing beyond vague promises of some military assistance against the English.
