Arni jagir (a jagir is hereditary assignment of land and of its rent) lay in the district of north Arcot about 80 miles to the south-west of Madras. The Jagirdar was thus the ruler of this 184 square mile area with a population about 80,000 in 1875 residing in 139 villages. He inherited the jagir from his seventeenth century ancestor who had received the jagir as a reward for military services by the Maratha chief Shivaji during his expedition into the Carnatic. |
