Richard Cobden (1804-65) was a statesman in the true meaning of that word. Elected to Parliament in1841 his Herculean labours on behalf of free trade almost brought him to financial ruin until two public subscriptions were raised successfully stabilizing his finance. The Cobden Club was instituted in 1866 in England to spread Cobden’s philosophy and in 1879 Cobden Clubs were set up at the universities of Calcutta and Bombay and these medals awarded.
