WYON., rev : Britannia standing and India seated, to left, receiving assorted goods in exchange for tea, etc. from four figures symbolic of Empire, to right. At top : CALCUTTA. In exergue : INTERNATIONAL / EXHIBITION / 1883-84. Signed : J.S. & A.B. WYON.
A bronze specimen has been noted with a gilded crown. A copper gilt specimen was noted with an original box on which ‘Wyon Regent Street London’ and Wyons’ emblem thus suggesting manufacture by Pinches. On the bottom of the box of the gilt specimen was impressed in gold lettering ‘A.J. Leppoc Cappel Esqre Director General of Telegraphs in India’. |
