In centre coat of arms of Lansdowne with motto below : Virtute Non Verbis (Strength not words), around border : PRESENTED - BY - HIS - EXCELLENCY - THE - GOVERNOR – GENERAL. Signed : A. Wyon SC.
Lansdowne did not mimic Dufferin in using a different Governor-General medal in India than he did in Canada. Lansdowne moved directly from his position in Canada to his appointment in India and used the same ‘conjoined busts’ medal as he had used in Canada with only the legend changed while his arms on the reverse underwent subtle changes (the signature changed from J.S. & A.B. Wyon to A. Wyon). This medal was probably struck in London by Pinches. The next two Viceroys, Elgin and Curzon, used the same ‘conjoined busts’ type of medal.
The Marquess of Lansdowne was Viceroy from December 10, 1888 to January 27, 1894. |
