The conjoined busts design initiated by Lansdowne and used through Curzon was discontinued by Minto. A new obverse type for a Viceroy medal with no legend around border. Believed to be the first Viceroy medal to be struck at the Calcutta Mint. Henry Pownall noted in Viceroys and The Viceroy’s Medal ‘A die is recorded in Wyon’s Medal Dies Register and is recorded in Wyon’s Medal Dies Register and is recorded contemporaneously as ‘Earl of Minto (Canadian) sent to Calcutta 23 Jan 1906’. It would seem that it was sent so that it might be used, in some way, for the striking of his Viceroy’s Medal shortly after his appointment’. However, Minto’s Canadian medal was the standard conjoined busts on the obverse with his arms and legend on the reverse. This die was not used in Calcutta and his Viceroy medals differ from the Canadian medal and from all previous Viceroy medals. In the die impression registers of the Calcutta Mint this medal is described as ‘Lord Minto’s Dufferin Fund Medal’. The first Viceroy medal suspended from a lug and ring for wearing. |
