The Aga Khan, Aga Sir Sultan Mohamed Shah, was born in Bombay in1877. As hereditary ruler of the Moslem Ismaili sect, he was born to great power and wealth. He worked for Moslem support for British rule in India and founded the All-India Moslem League (1906) and was President from 1909-1914. He acted as chairman of the British-Indian delegation to the Imperial Conference in London in 1930-31, represented India at the Geneva disarmament conference in 1932, at the League of Nations the same year and again from 1934-37; in the latter year he was President of the General Assembly. Probably best known for his fabulous wealth and interest in horse breeding and racing. He took up residence in Europe and died there in 1957. |
