Mountbatten continued the use of the ‘arms/palm trees’ medal pattern that had been used by all the Viceroys since Hardinge except Willingdon and Wavell. Mountbatten was Viceroy (and Governor-General) only from 24 March 1947 to 15 August 1947 and a ‘Viceroy’ medal has not been traced. He became the first constitutional Governor-General on 15 August 1947 until he left India on 21 June 1948. Given the lead time necessary to produce a Viceroy medal (the first issue of most Viceroy medals was several months after the Viceroy took office) it is likely the Calcutta Mint produced only the ‘Governor-General’ version as illustrated. Usually fitted with a claw and ring suspender. |
