Description | : | obv. The arms of Tagore, an elephant and lion supporting a centre section of a face on a star within a circle, with Nagari inscription, topped by an Indian god. The arms are mounted on an oval border of gold with a scroll suspender and a gold bar to attach a ribbon. (Specimen noted had engraved on the oval border : AWARDED TO LEONARD DESBRUSLAIS), rev. Engraved : 1895 / PRESENTED BY / H.H. THE MAHARAJAH SIR J.M. TAGORE K.C.S.I. / FOR ENGLISH COMPOSITION / ST XAVIERS COLLEGE.
The Maharaja, awarded that title by Viceroy Lord Lytton in 1877, and made hereditary by Viceroy the Marquess of Lansdowne in 1891, held a leading position in Bengal. He was President of the British Indian Association. Fellow of the University of Calcutta, trustee of the Indian Museum, Governor of Mayo Hospital. The owner of extensive estates he made many munificent endowments and donations for religious, charitable and educational purpose. |
