Bharatpur (as it is known today) is now noted for its bird sanctuary which, until fairly recent times, was used for regular ‘shoots’ by the Maharaja and his guests. Records at the sanctuary between 1902 and 1964 show that H.E. Viceroy Lord Chelmsford and his party on November 20, 1916, with 50 guns, bagged 4,206 birds. This record is closely challenged by Lord Hardinge’s Party on December 3, 1914, when 49 guns bagged 4,062 birds. Lords Curzon and Linlithgow also appear to have been fair shots. The fort is still there but a rather sad reminder of its former splendor and its reputation as the ‘Iron Fort’. The museum is a tatty place with decaying memorabilia. |
