Description | : | obv. Queen Victoria, facing left. The legend differs on the silver and copper. Silver legend : VICTORIA D.G. BRIT. REG. FID. DEI. Copper legend : VICTORIA D: G: BRIT: REG: FID: DEF: (Victoria, by the grace of God, Queen of the Britains, Defender of the Faith). The copper medal has a small ornamental spray beneath the bust, rev : Within a wreath : PUNJAB / EXHIBITION / OF / ARTS, PRODUCT & MANUFACTURE. At bottom a ribbon.
Some copper pieces are marked ‘specimen’. The silver medal has an incorrect legend: DEI (God) instead of DEF> (Defender). This mistake turns up on various other medals until the mid 1860s. The Calcutta Mint record in a die impression register does not give the metal in which the medal was struck but does illustrate a die impression with the correct legend. It is almost certain that the Calcutta Mint struck the silver specimen as well. William Wyon died n 1851 but his diademed head of Queen Victoria was to grace many medals after his death. |
