Struck at the Calcutta Mint, Forrer states that R.A. ST. was a signature used by Thomas Stokes, a British medalist who worked mostly in Australia. J.L. has not been identified. William Wyon’s signature below Victoria’s head is growing rather faint on this medal, a precursor to future days when it disappeared completely. This occurred on Calcutta and Bombay mint dies. Copper examples sometimes have: SPECIMEN, impressed over W. Wyon signature, Jubbulpore was one of the larger cities in the Central Provinces. Now known as Jabalpur, near Bhopal in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. |
