Description:obv. Bare head of Alber, left, in central field. Encircled by a laurel wreath in a wide border, rev. Prince of Wales plumes in centre, encircled by the royal motto on a garter : HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE (Evil be he who thinks evil), encircled by the collar chain of the Order of the Star of India with the collar badge separating the border legend at bottom. Around outer border : H R H ALBERT EDWARD PRINCE OF WALES INDIA 1875-6. Signed : PHILLIPS. FECIT / 0 1875 0.
Including crown suspension medal measures 55.5 mm x 83 mm. Each medal was fitted with a suspension in the same medal except the white metal version which had a silver crown suspension fitted. The gold (mintage 48) and the silver (165) are numbered and named on the edge. Edge naming of gold specimens noted : (1) H.H. MAHARANA NIHAL SING OF DHOLEPORE No 25 (medal was presented to him at Agra). (2) RAJA HEERA SING BAHADOOR OF NABHA No 47 (medal presented at Lahore). Silver : (1) HONBLE MAHOMED ALI ROGAY No 42 (medal presented at Bombay, (2) NAWAB SAIAD MIR KHAN SIRDAR BAHADUR No 60 (medal presented at Delhi), (3) RAJA JANOJEE BHONSLAY No 134 (medal presented at Agra). See 875A for information about the royal visit and the city of presentation for all the gold medals. The miniature has been noted in gold only and is identical to the full size medal including the crown suspension (with suspension the diameter is 31 mm x 20 mm). The miniature is signed although the reduction process has almost obliterated the signature. Stamped on the edge near the suspension : 18 CT. Inferior bazaar copies are said to exist but none have been examined by the author. While there are some mentions of the ‘A-E’ miniature in numismatic references there appear to be no references to this piece and the author has only examined one.
