Struck at the Calcutta Mint, this appears to be the first presentation medal of a Lieutenant-Governor of Bengal. Sir John Woodburn, born in India at Barrackpur, was the Lieutenant-Governor from April 1898 until he died in office at the age of 59 on 21 November 1902 and was buried in the Circular Road Cemetery, Calcutta. A kind and generous man who passed the Calcutta Municipal Act and was remembered fondly by the Calcutta populace for his efforts to combat the plague.
