Sample edge naming : CHOWDHARI GOPI NATH SINGH, HYGIENE, 1916. Calcutta Mint die impression registers state that the first issue of this medal by the mint was in 1918. The medal used prior to that time, from 1912, must have been produced elsewhere. The latest awarded medal noted was in 1928.
In Lucknow, not far from the Residency, is King George’s Medical College and Hospital. The foundation stone was laid on 26 December 1905 by the Prince of Wales and the building completed in 1912. The Medical College, along with the Canning and Isabella Thoburn Colleges, from Lucknow University. When visited in 1984 neither the registrar nor other senior staff had ever seen this medal suggesting it had been discontinued many years ago. The campus Mosque-style buildings are in the shape of a Moslem arch, of the College. He showed us the superbly organized library, spotless and impressive, unlike most others seen including the Asiatic Society in Calcutta. More than 2000 students attend the college in five faculties of medicine, dentistry and nursing. The government wanted to change the name of the college but the trustees were too proud of its history. |
