A small head of a cow in upper left corner and a small village in lower left corner. Signed : K W in monogram form, rev. At top centre Hardinge's coat of arms, with flowered ornamentation flowing from arms along top and down sides. F.K. Wezel was Chief Artist/Engraver at the Calcutta Mint from 1893 until 1922. These pieces were struck for the opening ceremony on 4 March 1915. A notation in the Calcutta Mint die impression register pertaining to the large medal states ‘blank to be cut from 1/4" thick strap. Large medal fine silver. Finished medal to weight 55 tolas’ (20.62 ounces. One ounce equaled 2.667 tolas). The smaller medal is described as a miniature by the mint and was struck in standard silver. The miniature weight 2.95 ounces and is 1/8" thick. |
