Tata was by far the most prominent of Indian industrialists, Parsi or otherwise. Born in 1839, he established Messrs. Tata and Co., with branches in the Fat East, Europe and America. He was a pioneer in the cotton manufacturing industry, developed silk culture in Mysore, copper ore in the Central Provinces and established the Tata Iron & Steel and Hydro Electric Companies. He also built the Taj Mahal Hotel in Bombay. Died in 1904. |
