Description:obv. Within a centre circle an opening flower. Around a wide border a floral-based ornamental wreath with a lion's head at bottom, rev : A painter's pallet in centre. On a ribbon above : FINE ARTS SOCIETY. On a ribbon below : MADRAS. All within a wreath.
Names of awardees and dates usually impressed on edge: Names and dates noted: Silver: M. PITHAWALLA 1902, C.G.W. CLOGSTOUN 1907. Copper: MISS. B.M. HUME 1903. 1902 specimen signed: ORR & SONS (P. Orr & Sons, active in Madras and Rangoon). Later specimens noted had signature removed from die. M. Pithawalla was one of the most famous painters in India (and in England as well), winning the Bombay Art Society’s gold medal a record three successive times.
